We need to take time
apart, be still, listen
for God’s voice

Jesus made a habit of withdrawing to a “lonely place apart,” not just to be away from people and a busy ministry but to be with God.
What did Jesus do time after time in those deserted hills? He sought out his heavenly father. He listened to him. He communed with him.
Jesus beckons us to do the same.
As a nurse, I’m familiar with signs and symptoms of various diseases in the physical realm. Not so easy to spot are the signs and symptoms of sickness of the soul.
What emerges when someone neglects his or her soul? Most likely you’ll see anxiety, self-absorption, isolation, lack of compassion, apathy, chronic fatigue, and little desire for God.
What would be signs of a healthy soul when you are connected to God? Love, joy, peace, compassion, giving and receiving grace, discernment, balance, focus.
Living in a world of iPods, cell phones, 24-hour TV and overloaded days makes it hard to turn down the volume. Going away to a quiet place can refresh your soul and renew your faith.
Hurrying and busyness are two great enemies of the spiritual life. Additionally, we are conditioned to feel our existence is justified only when we are accomplishing something.
God shouts to us through the glories of his creation, but when calling our name, he speaks with a quiet voice. As his disciples, do we respond to Jesus’ invitation? Do we long to hear his voice, hear Christ call us to himself?
If our answer is yes, then we need to remind ourselves that it begins with being still and knowing that he is God.
I went on my first retreat in 1994, and my reaction following was, “Why did I wait so long?” Withdrawal from my ordinary routine gave me time for reflection, prayer, nourishing my soul and, most importantly, rest!
A retreat is not a luxury. It is a necessity. I invite you to find a place of retreat, maybe for only a day, maybe longer.
I’m to be a retreat leader at “Spirit Streams: More Than You Can Imagine” at Zephyr Encampment near Mathis Jan. 10–13.
This three-day retreat based on the Five Day Academy model is a wonderful way to experience a combination of retreat and community. The time can refresh your spirit and rejuvenate your soul while you enjoy the company of other like-minded Christians on the “journey of life.”
I hope you will consider joining us in January! Registration information and a printable brochure can be found at www.umcswtx.org. Indeed, let this retreat be a gift you give yourself!
