Methodist Healthcare Ministries grants $8 million for ’08

San Antonio-based Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas approved $8 million in grants Nov. 12.
The money is to go to 34 organizations from San Antonio, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Cotulla, Crystal City, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Pharr, Pleasanton and McAllen during 2008.
The list includes a $304,500 grant to the Southwest Texas Conference for pastoral education, Clergy Health and Wellness, and Methodist Healthcare System’s chaplaincy program.
The agency’s board of directors awarded grants to:

> Gateway Community Health Center, Laredo—$424,557.
> Daughters of Charity at La Mision—$378,000.
> El Milagro Clinic, McAllen— $290,210.
> Amistad Community Health Center Inc.—$236,057.
> Mercy Ministries, Laredo—$231,420.
> The Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health, San Antonio— $222,075.
> Hope Family Center, McAllen—$221,550.
> United Medical Centers, Eagle Pass—$209,475.
> “Get Fit” Program, Eagle Pass—$203,873.
> Women Involved in Nurturing Giving Sharing—$189,000.
> Planned Parenthood—$150,000.
> Family Service Association—$150,000.
> South Texas Rural Health Services Inc., Cotulla—$138,600.
> Hispanic Religious Partnership for Community Health—$136,500.
> Karnes Community Health Center—$105,000.
> University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio—$101,000.
> San Antonio Clubhouse Inc.— $85,050.
> San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic—$85,000.
> Transplants for Children—$78,750.
> Ricardo Salinas Dental Clinic at UTHSC—$67,900.
> Bio Med SA—$60,000.
> Child Safe—$60,000.
> Corpus Christi Metro Ministries—$50,000.
> Voices for Children of San Antonio—$50,000.
> Bexar County Community Health Collaborative, San Antonio—$40,000.
> Corazon Ministries, Travis Park UMC, San Antonio—$38,434.
> Vida y Salud Health System Inc., Crystal City—$36,591.
> Atascosa Health Center, Pleasanton—$34,650.
> Brownsville Community Health Center—$34,650.
> Nuestra Clinica Del Valle, Pharr—$34,650.
> Community Health Centers of South Central Texas—$34,650.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries, which is affiliated with the Southwest Texas Conference, is the largest private provider of healthcare services to the uninsured in South Texas.
Formed in 1995, Methodist Healthcare Ministries represents the church in the for-profit partnership that owns Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio and Boerne. Half the profits from the hospital system go to Methodist Healthcare Ministries for work with the medically underserved.
