Disaster-response training to be offered
Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Coker UMC, San Antonio

The Grace UMC Disaster Relief Team receives training from Red Cross instructors, fulfilling requirements to operate a disaster shelter at Fulmore Middle School in south Austin. Thirteen members of Grace attended the final class.

The Southwest Texas Conference Disaster Response Committee is sponsoring a three-day event designed to give an introduction to United Methodist Committee on Relief programs and direction in mapping our conference disaster response and recovery program. The event is to be Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Coker UMC, San Antonio.
Information presented is to provide a panoramic view of what happens in disaster response from the onset of the emergency to the final nail. All participants are to attend five sessions and participate in group meetings and discussions to become familiar with relief committee programs, policies and funding. Program highlights include case management, spiritual and emotional care teams, local church preparations, volunteer management, responding to children and youths following a disaster, relief and recovery, and early response.
The relief committee is sending experienced training consultants to the event as well as providing covenant agreements between the committee and the conference.
Pastors, church leaders and people with questions about disaster preparedness and relief planning are encouraged to attend.
Participation costs $60 for those who don’t require accommodations and $120 for participants who spend two nights in double occupancy hotel rooms. Meals and snacks are provided throughout the event. The deadline for registration is Jan.16.
